Congratulations to our Student of the Month, Jeff 🌟🎉🎉 SO very proud of your accomplishments ✨
As a 54-year-old man, I found myself overweight and out of shape. I felt like shit (FLS), looked like shit (LLS), ate like shit (ALS), and slept like shit (SLS). All I was doing was working and not taking care of myself (physically & mentally). As a former athlete and martial artist, I always took a lot of pride in being fit physically, exercising regularly, eating healthy, and sleeping well.
Back in March of this year, my wife Amy told me about this incredible hot yoga and spin studio that she found that was relatively close to our house that I should check out. I came to a class with her one weekend day in March and was hooked. Since I started, I have lost over 35lbs and feel much better. I started attending the early morning classes at either 5AM or 6AM. This created a routine which caused me to be more structured and disciplined in my life. I stopped eating junk food and snacks after dinner, limited my alcohol consumption dramatically, and went to sleep much earlier because I had to get up so early in the AM for class. In addition, because I had signed up for class in advance, I felt compelled to come to class (even though I did not want to) on many occasions. I was accountable to someone other than myself to get my ass to the studio and put in work without any excuses.
The teachers (both yoga and spin) @ HOTFLO are absolutely incredible. If you simply show up, put in the work, sweat, and do your best (whatever that is for the given day), the results will come.
The five hindrances of mindfulness are 1) sensual desire, 2) ill will, 3) sloth and torpor, 4) anxiousness and worry, and 5) doubt. Sloth and torpor are forces in the mind that drain vitality and limit effort. Sloth manifests as a physical absence of vitality. The body may feel heavy, lethargic or weak. Torpor is a mental lack of energy. We need to constantly remind ourselves that age doesn’t define us and we are the only one telling ourselves “we can’t.” My favorite yoga class was the one where the instructor shouted back at me “YES YOU CAN!” You’re capable of anything you set your mind to 💛✨
